Do you remember ‘Show & Tell’at school?

My heart still constricts at the very thought of it, although there are those for whom it was the highlight of the day - their longed for moment in the spotlight. It has taken me a while to become comfortable with exhibiting my work, to feel the raw vulnerability and do it anyway. Participating in group shows, such as ‘Strange Familiars’, is a wonderful experience. Firstly there is the comfort of being surrounded by fellow artists, spreading the pressure, if you will. Secondly, the astonishing talent and vision of fellow artists is so stimulating, and their different interpretations of the given theme lead to very sparky conversations. Thirdly, to see my work within the context of all the other work on display helps to dispel Imposter Syndrome, and reassures me that my work is worthy.

Solo shows are another kettle of fish altogether. The weight of responsibility – for example with my commissioned show Faces of Bankside is almost crushing. However I feel very deeply that once the work is made – whether during an intense collaboration process, or by very solitary and mindful practice – the work should be shared. We never know how our images will resonate with a viewer, what comfort they may offer, what richness of life experience the viewer in their turn will bring to their viewing, what dialogues may be sparked, and for me this is the crucial point of my photography. I would like every image I share to be the start of a conversation.

So, do talk to me!
